The victorian bath

I created this bathtub and mirror as hero props for the larger bathroom scene over the span of 4 weeks. I wanted the mirror to be an eye catching piece with as much ornamental details savored as possible. The ornaments were created separately in Maya and then brought into ZBrush to be polished and placed in a design using the insert multi mesh tool. This sped up the process of creating the high poly substantially. The challenge came with baking all this detail down to a plane surface, keeping the edges following the outlines of the ornaments while still preventing any distortion in the design.

The bathtub was created with both the concept design and the era of which it reperesents in mind. I did as much research as I could on the Victorian era with the limited time I had. I researched plumbing to find out how the cast iron pipes could be connected to make sense technically, as well as what materials where used to create tubs. As this home seemingly belonged to a wealthier family, the inside of the tub would likely be coated in porcelain while the outside is a painted iron.

I worked with my own materials as base, adding much detail and change to it in Substance Painter. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of creating the materials in Substance Designer and I am particularly happy with how the porcelain in the interior of the bathtub came out. I have not worked much in Designer and I felt that the challenge gave me a better understanding of the software, which I hope to develop further in the future.
